Essential oils have become increasingly popular as people look for simple, natural ways to support their everyday wellbeing. But if you’re new to essential oils, knowing where to start can feel a little overwhelming.
Which oils should you choose? How do you use them? And how can they realistically fit into your everyday life?
For me, essential oils aren’t about replacing good nutrition, sleep, movement or medical care when it’s needed. I use them as one part of a wider holistic approach to wellbeing. They can fit into simple daily routines for relaxation, focus, sleep and emotional wellbeing.
And you don’t need a cupboard full of oils to get started. Often, a few carefully chosen blends that suit your individual needs are all you need.
Start with what you need
One of the easiest ways to choose essential oils is to start with how you want to feel or what you would like to support, rather than trying to learn about dozens of individual oils.
For example, you might be looking for something to become part of:
• A calming evening or bedtime routine.
• A moment of relaxation during a stressful day.
• Your morning routine when you want to feel more focused and energised.
• Your wellbeing routine during menopause and midlife.
• A travel or family wellbeing kit for when you’re away from home.
This is one of the reasons I created Aran’s Oils. I wanted to make essential oils feel simpler and more accessible by creating ready-to-use roller blends for different everyday wellbeing needs.
Instead of wondering which oils to combine or where to begin, you can choose a blend according to the kind of support you’re looking for.
How can you use essential oils?
You can enjoy essential oils in several ways without making your routine complicated.
A roller blend is one of the simplest options. I prepare the essential oils with a carrier oil, making the roller convenient to carry with you and easy to incorporate into your day. Always follow the directions provided with the blend.
A diffuser is another popular option. Adding the appropriate amount of essential oil to a diffuser can help create an enjoyable atmosphere in your home, perhaps something fresh and uplifting while you’re working or a softer, calming aroma as you wind down in the evening.
Scent can also become part of a familiar routine. Just as a particular song can bring back a memory, an aroma can become associated with a moment in your day, such as getting ready for bed, taking a break or preparing to focus on a task.
The important thing is to find something that fits naturally into your life, rather than creating another wellbeing routine that feels like hard work.
Using essential oils safely
Essential oils are highly concentrated, so using them correctly is important. Natural doesn’t automatically mean that something is suitable for everyone or should be used in every way.
Always follow the directions provided with the product and use the recommended amount. Essential oils used on the skin should be appropriately diluted, which is one of the reasons I like using ready-to-use roller blends.
Extra care may be needed when using essential oils around children, during pregnancy, with certain health conditions or medications, and around pets. If you’re unsure whether a particular oil is suitable for you, seek appropriate professional advice before using it.
I also encourage people to remember that essential oils are a wellbeing tool, not a replacement for medical care. If you have persistent or concerning symptoms, it’s important to speak to an appropriate healthcare professional.
Finding the right blend for you
With essential oils, more isn’t necessarily better. I prefer to start by asking a simple question: what would you like to support in your everyday wellbeing?
That might be creating a calmer bedtime routine, supporting relaxation during a busy day, feeling more focused, navigating midlife and menopause, or putting together something practical for your family or travels.
This is the thinking behind Aran’s Oils. I’ve created a range of ready-to-use roller blends and wellbeing kits designed to make choosing and using essential oils simple and practical.
I’m also developing my Aran’s Oils Blends Finder, which will make it even easier to explore the different blends and discover which options may best fit what you’re looking for.
Essential oils don’t have to be complicated. Start with what you need, keep it simple and make it part of a wider approach to looking after yourself.
